Sheepless In SeattleOne of my fabric quilt shops happened to have a booth at a quilt show. They had a lot of cool fabrics. A quilt kit grabbed my attention. The sheep fabric is so cute! The quilt kit is called Sheepless In Seattle. I could not leave the quilt show without this quilt kit. This is a nice size lap quilt. I used yellow flannel for the backing. Aren’t those sheep just the cutest things you have ever seen.

So when I have trouble going to sleep at night, I can count sheep! I used this pattern to make the 2nd Halloween quilt.

Halloween Quilt #2I love Halloween and all the fun fabric that is available. The fabric in this quilt was given to me by a friend that enjoys making quilts too. When we were at a local quilt show she saw the fabric and couldn’t resist getting it for me. She how much I loved Halloween fabric. All my quilting friends tease me about how much I love Halloween fabric. It is kinda funny at times how much Halloween fabric I have purchased.

The stars near the bats and pumpkin faces glow in the dark. That is so cool! Unfortunately, they do not glow that much to keep me awake at night. Darn, that would be cool if they did. I used Halloween fabric with dogs and cats for the backing. This pattern is pretty quick and easy to make.

Dinosaur Quilt

I made this dinosaur quilt for my nephew Axton Arlo Berkey born on November 2, 2011. I hope Axton likes dinosaurs as much as I do.

Outer Space QuiltEver since I watched the astronauts walk on the moon I have become interested in outer space and planets. When I was a kid I wanted to walk on the moon. I really enjoy watching the documentaries on The Discovery Channel regarding outer space and planets. There are some really beautiful pictures of outer space. It is amazing what the scientists can see through the telescopes.

One day at a local quilt shop I found a panel that featured planets, astronauts and the Space Shuttle. I added star fabric around each featured planet block. I made paper pieced stars using a light blue fairy frost fabric. The stars were easy to make and look really cool.

May all your travels be safe whether you are traveling locally or some where out of this world.

Desserts QuiltI love desserts whether it is a piece of pie, cake, donuts, brownies, chocolates, ice cream, cookies or candy! Although I love many desserts, my favorite is ice cream and donuts being a close second. One time at a local ice cream parlor, I went in and ordered what they called a Bell Ringer. The bowl was very large and contained a scoop of every flavor they sold on their menu. When the waiter served the large bowl of ice cream they rang a bell. If you ate the whole bowl of ice cream in one sitting without help from anyone else, it was free! Well, I decided to take the challenge. I could not finish the last scoop and a half of ice cream. Needless to say, I did not eat ice cream for awhile after that. I most definitely got my fill of ice cream. That was a few years ago, who knows if the challenge presented itself again whether I would take it or not.

My quilt guild has block exchanges periodically, so I signed up to participate in one. This block exchange took a year to complete. There were a total of 12 ladies in the group. We made the first block so there would be a sample block. Each month our box rotated to a different person on the list so they could make a block.

I decided to make a quilt featuring some of my most favorite desserts. At least there isn’t any calories in a dessert quilt. I provided all the fabrics for the block exchange. The ladies could make as many blocks as they wanted.

Although, the blocks were easy to make I really love the way this quilt turned out. It is really yummy!

I used ice cream and donut flannel on the back of the quilt. The binding has multi colored M&M’s.Dessert Flannel

Grandmother and MeAs a child whenever we went to spend time with my grandparents I noticed every bed had a quilt on it. My grandmother had made all the quilts in their home.It was fun to see what she had made.

Now that I enjoy quilting, I wish I had gotten to spend time with my grandmother to learn more from her. One time while visiting with my Aunt I shared with her that I wished I had one of my grandmothers quilts. We talked about several of our favorite quilt patterns. I mentioned my most favorite quilt pattern is Sunbonnet Sue and that I would like to make that quilt some day. My Aunt said that Sunbonnet Sue was my grandmothers favorite quilt pattern too. My grandmother had made a quilt with Sunbonnet Sue but I don’t remember seeing it. So one of my goals is to make a Sunbonnet Sue quilt in memory of my grandmother.

I mentioned to my Aunt how disappointed I was for not getting one of my grandmothers quilts from the estate sale when my grandparents had passed away. She mentioned she had some quilt blocks made by my grandmother that she was not going to use for any of her quilts. She asked if I would like them. Of course, I jumped with joy and accepted her offer. So a few weeks later a box arrived with lots of quilt blocks. It was like Christmas! I opened the box and laid everything out on the floor so I could admire each block my grandmother had made.

There were several 16 patch blocks of various colors. The blocks reminded me of the song A Coat of Many Colors sung by Dolly Parton. Anyway, I set the blocks aside and put all the other blocks back into the box. While sewing the blocks together for the center of the quilt I noticed a floral fabric that my grandmother had used that was the same fabric I had. So, I used my floral fabric for the border. Some of the corner blocks were made by me and some by my grandmother.  I used a 1930′s replica light blue floral fabric for the backing.

Even though my grandmother and I didn’t actually get to make this quilt together, at least I got to finish a quilt she started.

Thimbleberries QuiltThis quilt was a block of the month at a local quilt shop. Each month I received the fabric and pattern to make one block. There was a monthly get together at the shop to feature the current month’s block. They had a completed quilt on display so we could see what the top would look like.

Some blocks were easier than others. I like the colors and blocks in this quilt. My favorite block is called Bear Paw. On the quilt the Bear Paw block is the second block located on the top row.

I gave this quilt to my mom. When she passed away a few years ago I got the quilt back.

Red Hat QuiltI love the Red Hat Society. The group promotes socializing with other women. The women do a variety of activities such as going out to lunch, tea’s, movies, plays, tours or whatever the group is interesting in doing at the time

The ladies that are 50 and older wear purple outfits and red hats. If you are 49 and younger you wear lavender outfits and pink hats.

This quilt was one of the first quilt kits I bought that took me two years to get around to making. I love red and purple.

1930's Pinwheel QuiltA coworker had mentioned her little girl was moving from her crib into a big girl’s bed. They were needing to get some blankets for her bed.

I had some 1930′s fabrics that feature characters from nursery rhymes. So I made several pinwheel blocks and then framed the quilt with the fabrics used in the blocks. I used a fabric that has the ABC’s with children next to each letter for the backing.

I really love how this quilt turned out. Besides the little girl loving her new blanket so does her baby dolls as well. Thank goodness the babies love the quilt!

Back of 1930's QuiltHere is the back of the quilt showing the ABC’s.

Pink Star Wall HangingI wanted to learn how to paper piece using wax paper. So I signed up for a class at a local quilt shop. The class was very fun and informative. I really like the butterfly fabric I found for this wall hanging.

I have done some paper piecing since this class. It is fun but I find it is time consuming depending on the pattern you choose and how many small pieces are needed to make the block. There are some very beautiful and neat quilts that have have some if not all blocks are paper pieced.

I have a couple paper piecing quilt projects in various stages of completion. Once they are done I will feature them here as well.
